Ad budget formulas
Orders and clicks are rounded up. Use conversion rate and CPC from your own past campaigns where you can.
Example
You want 20,000 in ad revenue with an 80 order value, a 2.5% conversion rate and a 0.60 CPC. You need 250 orders and 10,000 clicks, so the ad budget is 6,000 and expected ROAS is 3.33×.
Check the budget is profitable
Compare expected ROAS with your break-even ROAS. If the budget needed gives a ROAS below break-even, raise order value or conversion rate, or lower CPC, before spending.
Plan in stages
Start with a test budget to measure real CPC and conversion rate, then scale. Numbers from small tests change as you reach bigger audiences, so recalculate as you grow.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate an ad budget?
Divide your revenue target by order value to get orders, divide by conversion rate to get clicks, then multiply by CPC.
What conversion rate should I use?
The rate for paid traffic to your store, which is often lower than your overall rate.
How much should I spend on ads?
Enough to hit your goal while ROAS stays above break-even.
Why is my budget so high?
A low conversion rate or order value means you need many clicks per sale.
Does this work for Google, Meta and TikTok?
Yes, for any platform where you pay per click.
