How to use the AOV calculator

  1. Enter total revenue for the period.
  2. Enter the number of orders in the same period.
  3. Add the number of units sold to see items per order and average item price.

AOV formulas

AOV = Revenue ÷ Orders
Units per order = Units sold ÷ Orders
Average item price = Revenue ÷ Units sold

Decide whether revenue includes shipping, tax and discounts, and keep it the same every time you compare periods.

Example

A store made 48,000 from 600 orders and sold 1,500 units. AOV is 80, customers buy 2.5 items per order, and the average item sells for 32.

Why AOV matters

Raising AOV grows revenue without buying more traffic. Because shipping and ad costs are often per order, a higher AOV usually lifts profit per order even more than revenue.

Ways to increase AOV

Set a free shipping threshold just above your current AOV, offer bundles and multi-buy deals, show related products at checkout, and add a small gift for orders over a set amount.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate AOV?

Divide total revenue by the number of orders.

Should AOV include shipping and tax?

Usually no. Most stores use product revenue after discounts, but stay consistent.

What is a good AOV?

It depends on your products. Track it over time and compare with your cost per order.

How is AOV different from average item price?

AOV is per order; average item price is per unit. They match only if every order has one item.

Does a higher AOV always mean more profit?

Not if it comes from heavy discounts. Check margin as well.
