CPM formulas
CPM stands for cost per mille, mille being Latin for thousand. It is the standard way to price and compare ad reach.
Example
A campaign costs 1,500 and delivers 250,000 impressions. CPM is 1,500 ÷ 250,000 × 1,000 = 6. At the same CPM, a budget of 3,000 would buy 500,000 impressions.
What is a good CPM?
CPMs vary by platform, country, audience and season. Broad audiences and off-peak months are usually cheaper, while narrow B2B audiences and the holiday season cost more. Compare against your own past campaigns rather than a global average.
CPM vs CPC
CPM is what you pay for reach; CPC is what you pay per click. If your ads have a strong click-through rate, a higher CPM can still produce cheap clicks. Look at both together with conversion rate.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate CPM?
Divide total ad cost by impressions and multiply by 1,000.
What does CPM stand for?
Cost per mille, meaning cost per 1,000 impressions.
Is a lower CPM always better?
Not always. Cheap impressions to the wrong audience rarely convert.
How many impressions will my budget buy?
Divide your budget by the CPM and multiply by 1,000.
What is the difference between impressions and reach?
Impressions count every view; reach counts unique people. One person can see an ad several times.
