Percentage formulas
Adding a percentage and then taking the same percentage off does not bring you back to the start, because the second step uses a different base.
Example
15% of 200 is 30, leaving 170. 30 is 15% of 200. Adding 15% to 200 gives 230, and taking 15% off gives 170.
Percentages in business
Percentages are everywhere in selling: discounts, tax, commission, margin and growth. Knowing which number is the base, the original price or the new one, avoids the most common mistakes.
Common mistakes
A 20% discount followed by a 20% price rise leaves you 4% below where you started. Margin and markup are also different percentages of different bases, so use the margin or markup calculator for pricing.
