Import duty formulas
This is an estimate. Countries differ in valuation rules, tax-free thresholds, extra fees and trade agreements. Many use CIF (such as the EU and UK), while others use FOB (such as Australia and the US). Registered businesses can often reclaim import VAT or GST.
Example
You import goods worth 10,000 with 1,200 freight and 100 insurance. On a CIF basis the customs value is 11,300. At 5% duty, duty is 565. Import tax at 10% on 11,865 is 1,186.50, so total taxes are 1,751.50, about 17.5% of the goods value.
Finding your duty rate
Duty depends on the product's HS or tariff code and where it was made. Look it up in your country's customs tariff, or ask your freight forwarder or customs broker. Free trade agreements can cut the rate to zero.
Duty vs import VAT or GST
Duty is a cost you usually cannot reclaim, so it belongs in your landed cost. Import VAT or GST is often reclaimable if your business is registered, so it affects cash flow more than profit.
Frequently asked questions
How is import duty calculated?
Multiply the customs value of the goods by the duty rate for their tariff code.

Do small parcels pay duty?
Many countries have a low-value threshold below which duty, and sometimes tax, is not charged. Thresholds vary and change.
Can I reclaim import VAT or GST?
Often yes, if you are registered for VAT or GST. Duty generally cannot be reclaimed.
