How to use the pallet calculator

  1. Enter your pallet size and the maximum loaded height allowed by your carrier or warehouse. Use the same unit for every size, cm or inches.
  2. Enter your carton dimensions and how many units each carton holds.
  3. The calculator tries both carton orientations and shows the best fit per layer, the number of layers and the total per pallet.

Pallet calculation

Cartons per layer = best of (⌊Pallet L ÷ Carton L⌋ × ⌊Pallet W ÷ Carton W⌋) and the carton turned 90°
Layers = ⌊(Max height − Pallet height) ÷ Carton height⌋
Cartons per pallet = Cartons per layer × Layers

This uses a simple column stack with all cartons facing the same way in a layer. Mixed patterns can sometimes fit a few more; also check the pallet's weight limit.

Example

On a 120 × 100 cm Euro pallet with a 180 cm height limit and a 15 cm deck, cartons of 40 × 30 × 25 cm fit 9 per layer and 6 layers high: 54 cartons, or 648 units at 12 per carton. The cartons cover 90% of the pallet.

Common pallet sizes

Euro pallets are 120 × 80 cm, UK and industrial pallets 120 × 100 cm, US GMA pallets 48 × 40 inches, and Australian pallets 116.5 × 116.5 cm. Warehouses and carriers often limit loaded height to between 150 and 220 cm.

Designing cartons to fit

If you can choose your carton size, pick dimensions that divide evenly into the pallet. Better fit means fewer pallets, lower freight and storage costs, and less damage from overhang or gaps.

Frequently asked questions

How many cartons fit on a pallet?

Multiply cartons per layer by the number of layers that fit under the height limit.

Can I use inches?

Yes. Use the same unit for every size and the result is the same.

Does the calculator include pallet weight limits?

No. Check that cartons per pallet × carton weight stays within your carrier's limit, often around 1,000 kg.

Can cartons overhang the pallet?

Most warehouses reject overhang because it causes damage, so the calculator keeps cartons within the pallet edges.

How do I work out pallets for a shipment?

Divide total cartons by cartons per pallet and round up. Use the CBM calculator for container volume.
