How to use the GST / VAT calculator

  1. Choose "Add tax" if your amount excludes tax, or "Remove tax" if it already includes tax.
  2. Enter the amount and your tax rate.
  3. Read the price including tax, the price excluding tax and the tax amount.

GST / VAT formula

Add tax: Tax = Net × Rate %, Gross = Net + Tax
Remove tax: Net = Gross ÷ (1 + Rate %)
Tax = Gross − Net

To remove tax, divide by 1 plus the rate. Do not subtract the rate from the gross price, which gives the wrong answer.

Example

At a 10% rate, a net price of 100 plus tax is 110, with 10 tax. To remove 10% tax from 110, divide by 1.1 to get 100.

Common GST and VAT rates

Standard rates differ by country: for example 10% GST in Australia, 15% in New Zealand, 9% in Singapore, and VAT rates of around 17–27% across Europe, such as 20% in the UK. Many countries also have reduced rates, so always check the current rate for your product.

Why removing tax trips people up

Taking 10% off a tax-inclusive price of 110 gives 99, not 100, because the tax was calculated on the net price. The correct way is to divide by 1.1. This calculator does that for you.
