How to use the landed cost calculator

  1. Enter the supplier price per unit and the number of units in the shipment.
  2. Enter total freight, the import duty rate for your product, and any other fees such as customs brokerage, insurance and port handling.
  3. Read your landed cost per unit. Use it, not the supplier price, when you set prices and margins.

Landed cost formula

Goods value = Supplier price × Quantity
Duty = Goods value × Duty rate
Total landed cost = Goods value + Freight + Duty + Other fees
Landed cost per unit = Total landed cost ÷ Quantity

This calculator applies duty to the goods value. Some countries charge duty on goods plus freight and insurance (CIF), so check your local rules. Import VAT or GST is usually reclaimable for registered businesses and is left out.

Example

You import 500 units at 8 each, so goods are worth 4,000. Freight is 600, duty at 5% is 200 and other fees are 150. Total landed cost is 4,950, or 9.90 per unit, which is 23.75% more than the supplier price.

Why landed cost matters

Pricing from the supplier price alone makes margins look better than they are. Freight, duty and fees can add 10–40% to the cost of a product, especially for bulky or low-value items. Landed cost shows your real starting point.

How to lower landed cost

Order larger quantities to spread fixed freight and fees over more units, compare sea and air freight, check free trade agreements for lower duty, and ask suppliers about pricing under different Incoterms such as FOB or DDP.

Frequently asked questions

What is landed cost?

The total cost of getting a product to your door: supplier price, freight, duty, taxes you cannot reclaim and fees.

How do I find my import duty rate?

Look up your product's HS code in your country's customs tariff, or ask your customs broker or freight forwarder.

Should I include import VAT or GST?

Usually not, if your business is registered and can claim it back. If you cannot reclaim it, add it to other fees.

How do I split freight across different products?

The simplest way is by units, as here. For mixed shipments, splitting by weight or volume is more accurate.

Does landed cost include warehousing?

Not usually. Landed cost stops when goods arrive; storage and fulfilment are separate operating costs.
