HS Code
An HS code is an international product classification number used by customs to set duty rates and track trade.
The Harmonized System uses six-digit codes shared worldwide, and countries add extra digits for their own tariffs. The code decides the duty rate, any import restrictions and trade statistics.
Using the wrong HS code can mean paying the wrong duty, delays or penalties, so check with a customs broker when unsure.

Two similar products can have different duty rates if they fall under different HS codes, such as cotton versus synthetic clothing.
