Discount formulas
Two discounts in a row do not add up. 20% off then another 10% off is 28% off in total, not 30%.
Example
A jacket costs 120 with 25% off. The sale price is 120 × 0.75 = 90, saving 30. If another shop sells it for 84, that is 30% off the original price.
For shoppers and sellers
Shoppers use this to check a deal. Sellers use it to set sale prices and to write clear promotions. If you run the sale, also check the discount profit calculator to see what the discount does to your margin.
Percent off vs amount off
A percentage feels bigger on expensive items, while a fixed amount off often works better on cheaper ones. For example, 10% off 20 is only 2, but "2 off" sounds small; "50% off" on a 20 item sounds large but costs 10.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a discount?
Multiply the original price by the discount as a decimal, then subtract it from the price.
How do I find the percent off?
Subtract the sale price from the original, divide by the original and multiply by 100.
How do I calculate two discounts?
Apply them one after the other: multiply by (1 − first) and then by (1 − second).
Does the discount apply before or after tax?
Usually before tax. Tax is then charged on the discounted price.
What is 30% off 50?
The sale price is 35, saving 15.
