How to use the marketplace fee calculator

  1. Enter the item price and any shipping you charge the buyer.
  2. Enter your platform's fee rates: the referral or final value fee, payment processing fee and any fixed fee per order.
  3. Add your product and shipping costs to see payout, total fees and real profit per sale.

Marketplace fee formula

Revenue = Item price + Shipping charged
Fees = Revenue × (Referral % + Payment %) + Fixed fee
Payout = Revenue − Fees
Profit = Payout − Product cost − Your shipping cost

Fee rules differ by platform, country and category, and change often. Check your platform's current fee page and enter those rates for an accurate result.

Example

An item sells for 40 with 5 shipping charged, so revenue is 45. A 15% referral fee, 3% payment fee and 0.30 fixed fee total 8.40. Payout is 36.60. After a 12 product cost and 6 shipping cost, profit is 18.60, a 41.3% margin.

Typical marketplace fees

Most marketplaces combine a percentage fee on the sale, often 6–15% depending on category, with payment processing around 2–3% and sometimes a small fixed fee per order. Some charge fees on shipping too, which is why shipping charged is included in revenue here.

How to keep more of each sale

Price with fees in mind rather than adding them later, raise order value with bundles, compare fee levels across categories and platforms, and consider selling through your own store for repeat customers.

Frequently asked questions

Does this work for Amazon, eBay and Etsy?

Yes. Enter each platform's current fee rates and it calculates payout and profit for any of them.

Are marketplace fees charged on shipping?

On many platforms, yes. This calculator applies percentage fees to item price plus shipping charged.

What is a referral fee?

A percentage of the sale that the marketplace keeps for listing and selling your item, also called a final value fee or commission.

Why is my profit lower than expected?

Percentage fees, fixed fees and your own shipping cost add up quickly on low-priced items. Check fees as % of sale.

Does this include taxes?

No. Sales tax, VAT or GST collected by the platform is usually passed through and not part of your revenue.
